The Book in Many Hands

Enoch Witness Mirror

Place two bounded Enoch witness, translation, quotation, or critical-edition records side by side without producing an authenticity or trust score.

The Mirror compares bounded properties. It never generates a numerical authenticity, trust, authority, canon, or theological truth score.

TEXTLANGUAGEDISPUTED

Difference is not deficiency

A fragment can be older but less complete. A later translation can preserve wording absent from surviving fragments. A community-use codex and a presentation copy can serve different functions. A critical edition can organize evidence without becoming a physical witness.

Two bounded evidence objects

The cards preserve each record’s own date dimension, medium, scope, custody state, and review status.

A

Manuscript fragment

4Q201 (4QEnochᵃ)

Physical witnessc. 200–150 BCE

One of the earliest working records in the dossier set for the Aramaic Book of the Watchers.

Context: Qumran Cave 4

Custody: Institutional custody reported in dossier

Limitations: Physical fragments do not constitute a complete “original Book of Enoch”; passage ranges, joins, dates, and custody metadata require catalogue verification.

Review state: dossier-derived; independent catalogue verification pending

B

Codex

Codex Panopolitanus (Akhmim fragment)

Physical witness5th–6th century CE

A major Greek transmission witness between Aramaic materials and the complete Geʽez tradition.

Open limitations and provenance

Context: Akhmim / Panopolis, Upper Egypt

Custody: Institutional shelfmark and current location require direct catalogue confirmation

Limitations: It is not an unmediated Aramaic original; scribal errors, Greek recensional variation, exact date, and modern shelfmark must be verified from the holding institution.

Review state: dossier-derived; independent catalogue verification pending

Axis-by-axis differences

“Same” and “different” describe the current fields only. They do not measure truth, value, purity, age priority, or theological authority.

Where the Mirror must stop

The interface cannot reconstruct missing wording, decide which witness is “authentic,” infer a lost original from visual similarity, treat a critical edition as an artifact, or turn a later complete copy into proof that every section existed in the same form at Qumran.
