False Messiahs

Matthew and Mark warn that many will come claiming messianic authority. The plural matters: the text describes a recurring field of deception rather than requiring every claimant to be the final adversary.

Historical claimants and movements

HISTORY

The first-century Judean and wider Roman worlds knew prophetic leaders, royal claimants, popular deliverers, and movements expecting divine intervention. Ancient sources are often hostile, compressed, or politically interested, so precise labels must be used carefully.

Later Jewish, Christian, Islamic, and secular movements have produced messianic or quasi-messianic figures in very different settings. A claimant's existence may illustrate the recurring warning without proving a specific end-times timetable.
